Briançon, cité Vauban
Historic site and monument
BRIANÇON
The ancient capital of the 'République des Escartons' in the 14th century and an Alpine garrison town, Briançon lies on the 'Route des Grandes Alpes', between Grenoble and Turin. With its ramparts, collegiate church, its 'gargouilles' or channels in the streets, it is a real treasure whose historical and architectural heritage is unique in the Alps. At an altitude of 1326 m, it is also the highest town in Europe and enjoys 'Villes de Pays d'Art and d'Histoire' status. Surrounding the picturesque streets of the Cité Vauban are the equally well-known and beautiful Clarée, Guisane, and Queyras valleys.
